17-Year-Old Stacey Irvine Eats Only Chicken McNuggets for 15 Years, Rushed to Hospital

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 11:51 AM PST

17-year-old Stacey Irvine of Castle Vale, Birmingham (in the UK) was living on a diet primarily composed of McDonald's chicken nuggets for 15 years. However, it all caught up to her when she recently had trouble breathing and collapsed.

She was taken to the hospital where doctors found swollen blood vessels in her tongue and the symptoms of anaemia. Stacey has had neither fruit nor vegetable, except for maybe ketchup, in 15 years.

Stacey's stressed out mother told The Sun: "I'm at my wit's end. I'm praying she can be helped before it's too late. It breaks my heart to see her eating those damned nuggets."

As a child, Stacy would absolutely refuse to eat any other food, preferring to starve herself. Her mother eventually settled for simply getting her to eat, but Stacy didn't grow out of the phase.

Her salt intake has been 912mg per day, twice the recommended amount, every single day.

Below is a picture of Stacy with all of her Happy Meal toys.

Mars Hill Church's Mark Driscoll: Worst Pastor Ever?

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 11:47 AM PST

I grew up in the Baptist Church as many of you already know. While there was a lot of positive that came from it – largely in direct relationship with other church members – there was always an undercurrent of fear and guilt that I found oppressive. Beyond that, I actually found the message often alienated me from the community and even from God.

I'd come to worship, youth group or go to church camp feeling pretty good and excited to see my friends. I loved the singing and the fellowship, even if I didn't agree with a lot of the theology. I could live with that discrepancy.

But more often than not, I left feeling worse than when I got there. I was told sternly that I was sinning, even if I didn't realize it. And rest assured God was watching. Summer camp was the worst. It seemed a gathering was incomplete until several children were crying, prostrating themselves and begging for forgiveness – for what, they weren't always sure, but they knew they needed it.

I felt dirty. Unworthy. Lower than low. And of course, the only prescription for such a spiritual malady was contrition and confession, as the church leaders saw fit to dispense. So when I read a two-piece blog post by my friend and colleague, Matthew Paul Turner, about a member of Mark Driscoll's Mars Hill church in Seattle and what he went through there, it dredged up any number of emotions and memories from the past.

Not pleasant ones, mind you.

I'll abstain from retelling the whole story since Turner told it so well to begin with, but I'll try to summarize. Basically, a young man named Andrew was engaged to a woman in the church. He was an active participant on many levels in the church, and she was the daughter of a deacon. However, one night he succumbed to temptation and got physically involved with a woman he knew from the past. They didn't have sex, Turner reports, but they "came close."

Andrew confessed soon after to his fiancée, and then to his small group leader within the church. On further inquiry, he confessed to having been physically intimate with his fiancée prior to marriage as well, which is (understandably) counter to the teachings and values confessed at Mars Hill. Andrew was required to attend numerous meetings with different leaders within the church, in which he was castigated for his sins, and even called a "wolf."

Here's the first big red light. Though the physical encounters with both women were consensual, within the community of Mars Hill, Andrew and all other men are considered to be sexual predators when engaging in any sexual contact outside the bonds of marriage.

Why? Because, as senior pastor Mark Driscoll often proclaims from the pulpit, women are "inferior vessels." Women, in their inferior state, can't be expected to be held accountable in the same way as men, who always bear the burden of forced aggression. Period.

If this was all there was, it would be enough, if not new information. Driscoll's legacy of misogyny is well chronicled. However it gets worse. A lot worse.

Church leaders at Mars Hill decide Andrew will sign and adhere to the demands of a behavioral contract they drew up. It outlines not only how he should go about seeking forgiveness for his sin, but also how he is expected to behave both within the church and elsewhere, including having no personal association with women anywhere.

Mars Hill Church "Church Discipline Contract"

Andrew was hesitant to sign the agreement, and subsequently submitted a letter ending his membership with the church. In response, a church leader wrote him the following:

If this is your decision, you need to know you are leaving as a member under discipline not as a member in good standing. What this means is Matthew 18 discipline we discussed in our last meeting will be escalated, as there has not been enough time to determine if in fact you are walking in repentance. It is communicating to [name of community group leader] and me that you are unwilling to follow the leaders of your church who have determined you have been in sin and that time will be needed to determine if you are in fact walking in repentance.

[Paragraph mentioning Andrew's ex-fiancee edited out by Matthew Paul Turner]

If this is your final decision, you will also need to know this will not be our final communication as this is not an instance where you can walk away from the mess you have helped create and leave many issues unaddressed.

Please let me know if this is in fact your final decision as we will need to know how to best remain in follow up communication.

And then the church leadership posted the following letter to all members of Mars Hill on their own internal social networking site:

File Attachments 341254 Letter to Members

There's so much to respond to here, but I'll try to be brief. First, for pastors of a church to tell members who they can or can't associate with outside of church smacks of cult-like behavior, as do the codes of conduct and public shaming of congregants. Had Andrew not confessed remorsefully to his fiancée and even his small group leader, there might be more grounds for calling him to account. But he readily admitted his wrongs and seemed to be seeking counsel and forgiveness.

But it wasn't in the way the church wanted it. He had to be punished in their way.

To claim another has committed "Gospel shame" is damaging and judgmental enough. But to do so in an open letter to the entire church about someone who is no longer a member at Mars Hill seems to me to border on slander.

What's more disturbing to me than all of the bullying, name-calling and shaming, sadistic tactics employed by the church leadership is that so many seem to accept this as a proper way to act as church to one another. Where is the grace? Where is the offer to help the couple reconcile or part peacefully? There's not even a hint of the old draconian "love the sinner, hate the sin" ethos. It's more like "hate the sin, abuse the sinner and shame him back into conformity."

Meanwhile the world watches, with many assuming this is typical, acceptable Christian behavior. It's not. There's nothing Christ-like about calling women "inferior vessels." Or in shaming a person publicly for their transgressions. Or in prohibiting them from engaging in relationship with others outside of the church.

And especially in ordering your entire congregation to effectively ostracize another person until and unless they will toe the line drawn by church leaders.

Our church in Pueblo, Colorado is made up in large part of people whose spirits have been damaged in other church settings in the past. what we have tried to present is a space of unconditional love, forgiveness and grace. We're not perfect, and we're not averse to calling people to account for their actions. But we try our best to love people through their struggles. We trust that, given the proper care and support, people will open up to the possibility that God's grace – not our discipline or judgment – will offer the healing they seek.

I'm embarrassed to call myself a Christian when I read heartbreaking stories like these. My only consolation is in claiming publicly to Andrew and others that this is not my understanding of the Way of Christ. This sadistic, hateful behavior is not what we're called to as church. It can be different; in some cases it is. But obviously it's not common enough.

I'm sorry for Andrew. I'm embarrassed by the actions of Driscoll and Mars Hill. In a perfect world, we who serve the damaged, alienated and outcast would have no job left to do. Until then, the best the rest of us can do is say, on behalf of Christians who equate faith with sadism, "I'm sorry. There is another way. You are loved."

FOLLOW-UP BY CHRISTIAN PIATT:

First, I owe an apology for mis-quoting Mars Hill's Pastor Mark Driscoll in an earlier post when I said he had called women "inferior vessels." In fact, he refers to them as "weaker vessels,' and not inferior.

The quote (or one of them at least) where this can be found is from a Bible study he posted online about 1 Peter 3:7, which says:

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. – 1 Peter 3:7

Driscoll goes on to say that "Men and women are equal but different," followed by the claim that, "Within the covenant of marriage, men are the head and women are the helpers."

He goes on in the same post to state the following:

In 1 Peter 3:7 we see this figurative use of the word to describe wives. It should be pointed out, though, that by implication Peter calls men "vessels," too, since the use of "weaker" shows that a "stronger" vessel exists, which would be the husband.

To his credit, Driscoll does assert that, though men are the "stronger vessels," this strength should be used to protect their wives instead of abuse or exploit them. He gives a number of examples of how he lives this out, including standing or sitting between her and other men, and so on.

Again, my apologies for misstating his claim about women. Feel as you may about him, it's incumbent on me to get the facts straight whenever possible.

I do, however, stand by my criticisms of Driscoll as a misogynist who frequently uses his pastoral power to subjugate women to a role of support for their men. Not only do I believe he is "proof texting" scripture (cherry-picking texts to assert a premeditated agenda); he also is acting un-Biblically when one considers texts such as that from Paul in Galatians 3:28, which says:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Granted, there are cases to be made form Paul's writing as well that women are somehow to be subjugate to men. However, we have to consider the cultural context in which these texts were written. Consider, for example, the fact that the women who followed Jesus as his disciples are not named for the most [art, and certainly are not considered among "the twelve." In the story of the feeding of the five thousand, the story notes that the number includes only men, "not counting women and children."

Ancient Jewish law outlines codes of conduct for how men are to treat their wives, all of which are consistent with how they are to treat the rest of their property. In that context, Paul's claim about there being no "man" or "woman" any longer would be considered remarkably radical.

Finally, there is no account of Jesus ever relegating women to a secondary role. Though the recorders of scripture may have marginalized the place of women in many cases, Jesus consistently held up, empowered and affirmed Jesus. In fact, it was the women – as Driscoll himself points out on the Mars Hill website – that stood fast at the foot of the cross when Christ was executed, and were the first witnesses of the resurrected Jesus.

Still, sexism like that which Driscoll preaches relegates women to a role of service to their man.

It's all well and good to say in one breath that women are "no better or worse" than men. But if in the next breath you clearly place them in a role of obedience and service to their male counterparts, there is nothing to call this other than what it is:

Brazen Misogyny.

PETA, Anjelica Huston Outraged at CareerBuilder Super Bowl Chimp Ad

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 10:53 AM PST

Animal activists are slamming the website CareerBuilder.com for once again featuring chimps in its Super Bowl ad.

The New York Daily News reports that PETA released a letter that actress and noted animal activist Anjelica Huston wrote to CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson.

"I am distraught that CareerBuilder has decided once again to feature infant chimpanzees... despite the public outcry and the condemnation of every well-known primatologist.

"Great-ape 'actors,' without exception, are torn from their mothers as babies, violently trained and then left to languish in cramped cages after they grow too large to control."

CareerBuilder has been using chimps in its Super Bowl ads since 2005. In fact, Huston leveled similar criticism at the company last year, to no avail, apparently.

The company, though, said it listens to what activists are saying.

"CareerBuilder supports the fair and humane treatment of all animals," CareerBuilder spokeswoman Jennifer Grasz told Forbes earlier this week. "During the production of our ad, we followed the strictest guidelines to ensure our chimpanzee stars were treated well and not harmed. We hired top trainers known to provide the highest standard of care. We had a member of the American Humane Association on set during the entire filming to ensure the chimpanzees were treated with respect."

CareerBuilder has a lot invested in these ads. A 30-second spot on this year's Super Bowl costs a stunning $3.5 million.

Did Demi Moore Replace Food With Red Bull Drinks?

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 10:39 AM PST

Ever since Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher began having problems, Moore has looked gaunt with some even referring to her as anorexic.

Moore's drink of choice for the past decade has been Red Bull with TMZ reporting, Moore was obsessively drinking it in weeks preceding her 911 emergency.

Moore had cases and cases of the drink delivered to her home as early as 2002.   Sources connected with Red Bull North America revealed Demi was so dependent on the energy drink, the company used her to market the product. The delivery schedule was frequent enough to ensure Demi was never without Red Bull.

The Sun claims the actress was drinking Red Bull in place of food.

Gross: 'Fear Factor' Contestants Drink Donkey Semen and Urine

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 10:34 AM PST

If there weren't enough reasons not to watch the disgusting reality show 'Fear Factor,' here is another one -- on the next episode, contestants must drink glasses of donkey semen and urine.

TMZ.com reports the sick stunt almost never made it to your living room -- NBC officials considered killing it, deeming it just too awful. But after several meetings they allowed it to air.

TMZ reports "multiple contestants" actually drank the stuff in order to move onto the next round.

Asked by EW.com a few weeks ago about the "grossest challenge" for this season, host Joe Rogan hinted at the donkey stunt.

"The one I want to give you, I can't," he said. "They're not even sure if they're going to air it. It's so over the top and ridiculous. When they told me, I really thought they were joking at first. I don't know where the debate is, but NBC is not sure if they're going to air it."

EW goes on:

"Fear Factor" producers typically make a case for gross eating challenges by telling the network the item is regularly consumed somewhere in the world. Horse semen (if not donkey semen per se) is sometimes consumed at food events in Australia and New Zealand.

The episode will air on Monday. You've been warned.

Stephen Reid of Bioware, the game maker, recently announced that players could have "same gender romances with companion characters" as part of "a post-launch feature."

But Perkins slammed the game for having "gone to the dark side" and claimed that parents are angry "that their kids will be exposed to this Star Warped way of thinking."

Senate Candidate Craig James: "Most Hated Man" in West Texas?

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 10:08 AM PST

By Jason Stanford

Handsome, rich, Christian and Republican, Craig James should have it made as a senate candidate in Texas. He's famous for playing football for Southern Methodist University and later for the New England Patriots. Lately he's gained new celebrity for doing color commentary on Thursday nights for ESPN's college football lineup. A universally known outsider running against lesser-known insiders, Craig James should be as popular in Texas as a pretty girl at closing time.

Not so much. Public Policy Polling just came out of the field with news that only 2 percent of Texas Republicans will vote for him for U.S. Senate. It's early yet, but if Republican political consultant Brian Mayes is correct, 2 percent is about where we should expect him to end up. In the interests of disclosure, I'm working for one of the Democrats in the race, and we aren't concerned with James in the slightest.

"It's not that people in West Texas don't like him," said Mayes. "It's that nobody likes him."

That's not hyperbole. Last year Stefan Hankin of Lincoln Park Strategies threw Craig James into a statewide poll and found that James was less popular in West Texas than Barack Obama.

That popular coach was Mike Leach, who went 84-43 at Texas Tech, holding the school record for wins. The Red Raiders went 5-7 in 2011, worse than any season under Leach.

Mayes is a 1991 graduate of Texas Tech University. Given half a beer and the slightest provocation he'll claim to "bleed black and red," the colors of his beloved Texas Tech Red Raiders. And under Leach, the Red Raiders popularized the spread offense and forced themselves into the national college football discussion.

Then Leach agreed to let James' son join the football team when he wasn't getting the playing time he wanted on the baseball team. Big mistake. James' son -- who became a bit player in his father's psychodrama -- hasn't really panned out at the college level. But using his ESPN credentials, James got onto sidelines during Tech practices and lobbied Leach to play his son. Failing that, Leach's lawyer alleged on The Finebaum Show that James would call the Texas Tech coaches from his ESPN booth during games to demand his son get on thefield.

"Nobody likes the helicopter dad, obviously," said Mayes.

These kinds of dads are well known on Texas football fields. I saw them when my sons, 10 and 8, played flag football. The specter of amped dads screaming, "Go hard!" and, helpfully, "You're playing a football game!" at their 8-year-olds was depressingly common. I saw one dad who "coached" his 6-year-old son so much that he made him cry at halftime. A buddy of mine quit coaching middle school football because of the helicopter dads. The archetype is so well known that the writers of NBC's Friday Night Lights created a character who got Coach Eric Taylor fired for—you guessed it—not starting his son.

Leach stuck to his guns, and why not? His team was going to bowl games and sending players to the NFL every year. You might have heard what happened next. James alleged that Leach made his son practice with a concussion and stand in a darkened shed as punishment. James hired a PR firm to push the administration into firing Leach. The Tech administration, eager to get rid of an increasingly powerful coach due an $800,000 payday in his contract, happily played along.

"The first thing you would do if you were truly concerned with your son is not to call a PR firm," said Mayes.

Leach denied the allegations in a tell-all book. Not surprisingly, everyone's suing everyone. Leach is now coaching at Washington State University, and James is enjoying the freedom that comes with being a 2 percent afterthought.

"I think 2 percent is his ceiling," said Mayes. "No amount of spin or fancy TV ads would make people forget that he did something dishonorable to Mike Leach."

Normally when you're at 2 percent, the problem is that people don't know you. James has the opposite problem. It says something that James recently admitting to taking "an insignificant amount" of money to play college football at SMU takes a backseat to his role in how Leach lost his job. Mitt Romney will take less heat for Bain Capital closing whole factories than Craig James is already facing for how he got one football coach fired.

James' vanity candidacy is a reminder that not all publicity is good publicity. James isn't the pretty girl in the bar. He's the guy who walks into a bar where all the women are friends with his ex.

Could the UFC and WWE Find a Way to Work Together?

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:55 AM PST

After rumors persisted about Chicago native and WWE superstar CM Punk walking down to the Octagon with Chael Sonnen at UFC on FOX 2 this Saturday night, it made me wonder if the UFC and WWE can work together and crossover. When talking to MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani, Chael Sonnen made an interesting point about why he wanted "The Voice of the Voiceless" to walk out to the cage with him.

One… we're friends, two… I really like him, three… it's his hometown, four… he's a big UFC fan and five… there is major crossover.  A number of years ago I think we all thought we had to compete with each other. That boxing, MMA and wrestling thought that we were going to have to have our own fans but what we have learned with time is that it's not true. People are crossover fans and just all around fans, especially when you're talking about CM Punk here in Chicago. That guy is royalty around here and I think it would have been fun for both of us.

Chael touched on an interesting point that I have been saying for years. How is professional wrestling, which is sports entertainment, in direct competition with the UFC? They don't compete directly with PPVs nor do they compete directly on cable television. Show me how the UFC or the WWE have suffered in pay-per-view revenue because of one another?

It also seems that Dana White has a great deal of respect and admiration towards Vince McMahon. You can see how some of the marketing over the last couple of years has emulated professional wrestling in some respects. Yes MMA is a legitimate sport, and professional wrestling is professional athletes acting. I know… I get it. Please keep the hate mail to yourself and hear me out.

I know some of you are pulling your hair out once again because I just compared the UFC to the WWE, but I hate to burst your bubble, there are  a lot of fighters who have also grasped onto the idea that marketing oneself through cutting a good promo and hyping a fight is a great way to get noticed and make money. Sure nobody is ripping their shirts off and telling you to say your prayers and eat your vitamins, but adding a little spice and bringing out some personality is sure a hell of a lot better than thanking your trainers, God, and telling the fans that you will fight whoever the UFC lines up. Zzzzz…boring.

Chael Sonnen seems to understand this "technique" the most. Sure, it's not for everyone. The sport still needs guys like GSP and Junior Dos Santos; all round good guys who do their talking in the cage. The sport is full of honorable classy guys and gals who feel they don't need to talk a bit of trash, but you have to love Nick Diaz, Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping, Josh Koscheck, Ronda Rousey and Josh Barnett for stepping out of that mold and giving the UFC and Strikeforce some personality. Imagine if all fighters were like NHL hockey players? I don't think the sport would survive. It's the fight game and with fights there needs to be hype. This has been the way since the beginning of time. Hell, it worked wonders when the Romans promoted their Gladiators. Not much has changed.

Getting back to the point or the question of why the UFC can't cross promote with the WWE? It's not like it hasn't happened before. Remember when Ken Shamrock made his run in the WWF back in the 90's? He came into professional wrestling  in his prime and was marketed as the "The World's Most Dangerous Man," a moniker ABC News gave him while he was fighting in the controversial UFC.  He was a UFC fighter getting into the WWF ring to feud with the likes of Vader, Brett "The Hitman" Hart and Shawn Michaels to name a few.

The WWF at the time had no problems having a former UFC fighter in their stable. To them it brought more legitimacy to their brand of sports entertainment.  Since then we have seen boxers like Mike Tyson, Buster Douglas and Floyd Mayweather cross promote within the WWE realm. Why would it be so crazy to see a UFC fighter do the same? Or vice versa?

Before Brock Lesnar retired there were rumors of him doing a special appearance at a Wrestlemania event to promote his upcoming UFC bout. Now how close that was to coming to actual fruition is not known. Those were merely just rumors and nobody really knows if that was accurate.

However, now that Lesnar is retired, do you not think that if he returned to the WWE that the storyline would be a former UFC heavyweight champ makes his return to the WWE ring? First off,  it's not a matter of "if" it's a matter of "when" Brock Lesnar returns to the WWE. They wouldn't all of a sudden put him into their video game if they didn't think he would make a return. The WWE is going to take their time in building his return to professional wrestling much like they have done with The Rock and his upcoming Wrestlemania bout with John Cena. Think about it, Lesnar hasn't been in a WWE video game since "Here Comes The Pain" in 2003. Why did they all of a sudden include him now? When Lesnar does make his much anticipated debut how many UFC fans do you think will be tuning in? Don't lie…you'll watch.

Professional Wrestling, the UFC and boxing have proved that they can co-exist because in some ways they have very different target markets. Guess what? Some of their audience do crossover to each other. It is true Boxing has an older demographic, WWE has a younger demographic and the UFC seems to have an audience somewhere in the middle. Since the UFC has become more mainstream, those audiences are starting to blur into each other, which is great for all three sport entities. Why can't someone enjoy boxing, MMA and wrestling? From what I'm seeing there are quite a few people who do.

Chael Sonnen is now playing down CM Punk's appearance at UFC on FOX 2, claiming Vince McMahon kyboshed the idea. Who knows how accurate that is? WWE's Royal Rumble is the next day and a little advertising at a UFC event to try and get a few more PPV buys doesn't hurt. I wonder if this is Chael playing the media to make CM Punk's appearance even more surprising when it does happen. We shall see. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Last year, there were meetings between Dana White and Vince McMahon. DW has never really divulged what those meetings were about. I do know at the time the WWE needed permission to use Brock Lesnar in their 2012 WWE video game and also allow Brock to promote it. Maybe there was an agreement in place to work together when it was convenient to help promote pay-per-views. With economic times being tough in the States, finding another marketing channel to advertise on once in a while is not always a bad thing.

Why would it be so crazy to see CM Punk walk down with Sonnen? It's really not that big of a deal. We have seen WWE stars at live UFC events in the past. If Mike Goldberg were to mention that CM Punk is walking out with Chael Sonnen, and elude to the fact that he is involved in the WWE's Royal Rumble on Sunday afternoon, would that be a bad thing? We have seen boxing and the WWE do crossovers. This symbiotic relationship has led to Batista walking out with Manny Pacquiao and HHH accompanying Mayweather to the ring.

On occasion, I don't think there is anything wrong with having a UFC fighter do an appearance at a WWE event, or seeing a WWE guy walk out with a UFC fighter. Or maybe we see a UFC star like Nick Diaz try his hand at professional boxing or a high profile professional boxer enter the Octagon…oh wait we saw that already…never mind. You get what I mean.

MMA fans quiver when someone compares their sport to professional wrestling. What people forget is that if it wasn't for professional wrestling, there would be no UFC. Here is something you may not have known. The UFC would have never had season one of the Ultimate Fighter on Spike had it not been for Vince McMahon giving Spike permission to air the show after Monday Night Raw. The rest is history. That is a fact.

That said, the UFC and WWE can work together on occasion and it can be mutually beneficial. I'm not sure what the big deal is. I haven't been a huge WWE fan since "The Attitude Era" ended but I can understand the buzz that is created when the two organizations do a little crossover. It's all in good fun. It's true that Professional wrestling and MMA are apples and oranges but let's not forget that they do come from the same fruit bowl.

Bellator Heavyweight Tournament Winner to be Determined March 16

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:48 AM PST

Bellator Fighting Championships returns to the Bayou State on Friday, March 16 for Bellator 61 live from Bossier City at the Horseshoe Riverdome. The night will feature the rematch between "The American Solider" Eric Prindle and "The Big Monster" Thiago Santos to determine a winner from last season's heavyweight tournament, as well a host of local talent from the Louisiana area.

"Louisiana's been an amazing home to Bellator. Our last two Louisiana events we're spectacular sell outs, so bringing Bellator to Bossier City was an easy decision to make," said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. "This Prindle-Santos fight has war written all over it and both of these guys have taken this huge fight very personally. March 16 should be a great night."

Prindle meets Santos after last season's Heavyweight Finals were declared a no contest as Santos delivered what was ruled an accidental illegal blow to the groin of Eric Prindle, which eventually halted the fight. The two will square off to determine who will earn the right to face current Bellator Heavyweight Champion Cole Konrad.

The night will also feature the quarterfinals of the Bellator Season 6 Middleweight Tournament. UFC veteran Maiquel "Big Rig" Falcao will make his Bellator debut against the dominant Norman Paraisy. Falcao enters Bellator with an astonishing 23 knockouts to his record and will look to keep that trend intact at Bellator 61.

In a matchup worthy of a Middleweight title fight, Brian "The Predator" Rogers battles Brazilian ace Vitor Vianna for a spot in the semifinals. For Rogers, the Ohio native wants to build off last season's semifinals appearance and punch his ticket to a guaranteed title shot. Vianna put up a tremendous fight against eventual Middleweight Tournament Champion Alexander Shlemenko and is eager for another long tournament run.

Entering Bellator on a 14-fight win streak, explosive Russian Vyacheslav "Slava" Vasilevsky will be making his U.S. debut in a fight with Victor O' Donnell. One of the most promising prospects in the world, "Slava" joins Bellator as two-time Sambo World Champion and will look to his mark with Bellator.

Giva "The Arm Collector" Santana is back with Bellator and will be gunning for another victim when he takes on Bruno Santos. Always looking for the armbar, Santana has tapped 13 of his 17 career opponents with the hold.

"A lot of fighters like to go out there and try to knock their opponents out as soon as they can, and that's the same way I am with my submissions," Santana said. "For me, to tap a guy out is the same feeling as the knockout. When a punch lands and you know you knocked your opponent out, I feel the same feeling when I lock up a submission on my opponent. I know right away that he's going to tap, and it's a great feeling."

Tickets for the event are now on sale and can be purchased online at Riverdome.com, by phone at 888-512-SHOW (7469) or by visiting The Gift Horse at Horseshoe Bossier City Casino. Tickets are priced from $25-$75. The event will also be broadcast LIVE starting at 7 p.m. CST on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. CST, with the first fight scheduled for 6 p.m. CST. The preliminary card, featuring the area's top local talent will be streamed on Spike.com starting at 6 p.m. CST.

Video: Ron Paul Says Welfare Helps the Wealthy

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:41 AM PST

During CNN's Republican debate in Florida on Thursday, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said he wants to abolish all income taxes and stop the transfer of wealth from the middle-class to the rich (video below).

Rep. Paul said: "My goal is to get rid of the 16th Amendment and the only way you can do that is not run a welfare system and a warfare system. I do want to address the subject about taxing the rich. That is not a solution."

"But I understand and really empathize with the people who talk about the 99 and the 1 because there is a characteristic about what happens when you destroy a currency. There is a transfer of wealth from the middle class to the wealthy, and this has been going on for 40 years."

2012 Fantasy Basketball: Marc Gasol, Kevin Garnett, E’Twaun Moore and More

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:39 AM PST

The nice thing about only 2 games is that I can actually get this post done before I have to go work so I don't have to work on it on the crowded El Train. The bad thing about only 2 games is that it's very common for one team to dominate the charts and the Pick Up Lines are pretty thin. I mean, only 41 guys played last night in the NBA, and Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo were not two of them… Slim pickins [sic].

Line of the Night: Marc Gasol (2.03) made up for his fairly appalling performance in the Grizzlies last game with 18 points (8-8 from the line), 11 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Which Gasol will go in drafts first next year? There's probably sports betting online going on already for that one.

Honorable Mentions: Kevin Garnett (1.77) provided some support for the Celtics with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 4 blocks. Yahoo's NBA home page claims it was all Paul Pierce (0.90) and his 44 minutes, 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists, but Garnett actually had the higher +/- score, indicating he was a big part of the Celtics come back. Funny how three days before the C's destroy the Magic and then they almost get blown out themselves… Is Boston tougher than we think? Am I talking too much about normal basketball instead of fantasy basketball?

With Chris Paul back, Mo Williams (1.75) only managed 18 points (with 4 steals), while Chris Paul (1.68) also had 18 points (10-11 from the line), with 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. So, who's the big loser with Paul back? Anyone who's read GMTR for more than a day should be able to figure that one out (even if you don't actually know who, you should be able to figure out where to look based on the words I used in the question. The answer is in the question).

Caron Butler (1.14) also had a nice game for the Clippers with 17 points (3 threes), and 2 steals. Since there were only two games, it makes sense that the next guy is also a Clipper: Blake Griffin (0.92) had 20 points (only 4-8 from the line), with 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks, and 3 turnovers. I mention the turnovers because that's Paul, Butler, and Williams combined for only 3 turnovers, so that plus the FT shooting was was kept Blake's otherwise monster line from scoring higher.

The other Grizz played hard, but to no avail… Mike Conley (0.59) had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals (the 4 steals, obviously the key there), while Rudy Gay (0.55) scored 24 points (3 threes), and grabbed 7 rebounds

***

Waiver Wire Line of the Night: E'Twaun Moore (1.65) (I'm just going to play it off like I've heard of him, since he is from East Chicago) got 17 minutes of run for Boston with Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo out with injuries. When you're starting Mickael Pietrus and Avery Bradley (which the Celtics did), there's bound to be a rookie breakout game. Moore did that with 16 points on 4 threes, 3 rebounds, and a block (0% owned). I wouldn't count on him making 4 threes on 5-6 shots every 17 minutes (especially since he only had 6 points in a career-high 19 minutes the game before), but he's worth keeping an eye on while Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo are out. I suppose if you're in a 20+ team league, he's worth an add until those two get back.

Pick Up Lines: Speaking of guys getting time with Allen and Rondo out: Mickael Pietrus (0.64) had 12 points on 3 threes (out of 8 he took) with 4 rebounds and 2 assists (4% owned). He had 14 points in his previous 30+ minute game, but then he missed a game right after that, so I'm not going to recommend him except, again, in those 20+ team leagues.

Randy Foye (0.32) is actually ranked #68 over the past week. Last night he only managed 7 points on 2-2 from the field and 2-2 from the line and I was going to mock the Player Rater for ranking him so well because of performances like that, but he started a bunch of games for the Clips there for a second (5% owned). If Chris Paul gets injured again (which, honestly, could definitely happen) or if Billups or Mo Williams miss some time, Foye has shown that he can do some fantasy damage. This is certainly more useful information for owners with daily changes, but if the injuries are significant, he would be a must add.

Biggest Loser: Sorry, Chauncey Billups (-0.50), but Chris Paul is back. With Mo Williams playing crazy good right now, Billups minutes dropped to only 22 in Paul's second game back, allowing Billups to only get to 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists with 4 turnovers.

The funny thing about having only 2 games is that Dwight Howard (0.12) ended up with 16 points (50% from both the field and the line 16 rebounds 0 assists

***

Daily rankings and stats come from the GMTR H2H Player Rater (beta version). They are based on the stat Wins Above Replacement Player (WARP) an estimate of the number of wins a player produces per week in H2H leagues over a replacement (waiver wire) player.

Soccer Breakdown: Lessons Learned from USA vs. Panama

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:35 AM PST

First thing's first, there is a special ring of purgatory reserved for an American soccer blogger/writer with the temerity to poo-poo a result on foreign soil ... even in a no-stakes friendly. In that regard, let's say a hearty well done for Graham Zusi for being Johnny on the spot and scoring inside of 11 minutes and the rest of the U.S. players for holding off a semi-dangerous Panama team for about 30 minutes after Geoff Cameron's straight red card.

It gave Jurgen Klinsmann a solid 2-0-0 start to the 2012 campaign before next month's higher-profile friendly with the dastardly Italians in Genoa. If anything, it's better to see U.S. 1, Panama 0 for the next couple hours on the ESPN crawl, right?

At the same time, there was something, let's say retrogressive about Wednesday night's friendly, though not from a sporting standpoint. It simply felt, oh, like it was 1995 all over again.

During the afternoon on Wednesday American soccer fans were treated, first, to a taunt Liverpool second-leg Carling Cup semifinal victory over Manchester City on Fox Soccer, followed by the second-leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinal between eternal blood rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona. Depending where you were those games were aired in crisp, sparkling HD with pulsating atmospheres at hallowed soccer grounds at Anfield and the Camp Nou, where the eyes -- and tweets -- of the world cast their gaze.

This isn't a U.S. can never be as good at soccer as it is in Europe argument, yet here it was a couple hours later and the U.S./Panama match wasn't available on cable in English, relegated to ESPN3 online and Galavasision's embarassingly awful Spanish broadcast in murky, standard definition.

Again, this is probably taking complaining on the Internet to another level, yet this felt like the days when my father and I would scramble and cross our fingers a U.S. game would -- if we were lucky -- air on Univision.

In short, everything felt a little second rate from what we've grown accustomed to, if in a totally spoiled first-world problem (ugh, buzzword) type of way.

However you frame it, the eyes of the world weren't exactly fixated on the Estadio Rommel Fernandez(*) for the U.S.'s 1-0 win over host Panama.

(*) Wonder if David Lee Roth and or Van Halen have ever performed a concert there? (C'mon, you know I'm not writing anything about Panama without sneaking a Diamond Dave or Teddy Roosevelt reference, however forced.)

Again, quality result for the U.S. "B/C" team. Did anyone on the field against Panama -- or Venezuela -- exactly distinguish himself for Herr Klinsmann going forward? Considering the German head coach still seems to rate Michael Orozco-Fiscal, it's thoroughly impossible to read between his ears.

Brek Shea, hellbent on a move to England apparently, is a lively player with a lot of drive and power wherever you stick him on the field. Nick Rimando, too, is solid as per usual in goal and should even at 32 remain in the mix as a second or third keeper.

The Bob Bradley-approved "Captain" Jermaine Jones and Ricardo Clark didn't do anything great or awful. Jones, for better or worse, appears right in the thick of Klinsmann's plans, even if the German-born midfielder's best chance to help the U.S. was probably in 2010 rather than 2014. If Jones reigns himself in, he's effective, but it all depends on what his role is: destroyer? disruptor? creator? shield? He launched some missiles from deep, but again drew a yellow card.

Clark? Glad he got a positive memory with the 97th minute winner vs. Venezuela, but if Kyle Beckerman didn't withdraw from the squad does he even see the field? Hard to see Clark vaulting past Beckerman or Michael Bradley or Maurice Edu or even Stuart Holden in the middle of the U.S. central midfield pecking order.

Moving on.

Tactically(*), with the U.S. playing a standard 4-4-2, until Cameron's sending off, the main focus of the attack seemed to come from the flanks. If this is going to be the main offensive strategy going forward, when the full U.S. team is called in it better be somebody like Shea serving crosses toward Clint Dempsey, not the other way around. If there's one thing Dempsey does -- obviously he does more -- but the Texan knows how to finish off movements in the box.

(*) These two matches weren't exactly the free-flowing, revoluntionary soccer Klinsmann hinted at in August, no?

Hard to say any of the U.S. forwards who saw the field did enough to declare themselves worthy of being called in for the Italy match -- which figures to be Euro-based player packed. Teal Bunbury has potential, but at what level? CONCACAF or a higher international? Chris Wondolowski is a nice MLS grinder and has the worst luck in a national team shirt, getting denied on an absolutely brilliant reaction save by Luis Mejia.

In typical U.S. two steps forward, one step back fashion Cameron shined against Venezuela only to get sent off for an arm bar on Blas Perez, who'd run behind the defense and had a clear 1-v-1 with Sean Johnson unless the Houston Dynamo man interceded. Did Perez let his feet go out from him rather easily? Sure. At the same time, in the state of the modern soccer game what is and isn't a red card anymore? Who knows. Cameron might have been better off stamping on Perez rather than leaning into his with his forearm.

Again, considering his track record it's probably fruitless to guess what Klinsmann gleaned from this month of practices and two friendlies. Aside from the Bundesliga Badboy, "Captain" Jermaine and Shea nobody else who featured is a sure-thing to play next month in Italy. Maybe a couple of the players, say, Zusi did enough to warrant a spot on a roster vs. a CONCACAF minnow to save guys like Dempsey or Landon Donovan a trip across the Atlantic.

Like most USMNT January friendlies, the best approach is to take the Homer Simpson reaction to the family's ill-fated shortcut to Itchy & Scratchy Land. So, as he said, "Let us never speak of this again."

SNY Releases Statement Regarding Cancellation of 2012 SNY Invitational

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:31 AM PST

After being notified yesterday, two days prior to the start of the SNY Invitational, that Long Island University was no longer available to us, we worked through the night to come up with what we believed was a viable plan to move the event to St Raymond High School for Boys.

Unfortunately, as the details related to the large expected crowd and complex logistics became more clear, it was determined that St. Raymond's facility could not adequately accommodate an event of this size on 24 hours notice.

While we regret the outcome – we are committed to making sure the four schools and all of the deserving Tri-State Area students receive their promised funding and scholarships.  We are disappointed this year's tournament will not take place and apologize for any inconvenience this causes the teams, their fans and our corporate partners.

We are committed to the SNY Invitational maintaining its position in the community and it is our intent to pick up where we left off in 2013.

16-Year-Old Bailey Gerhardt Stops Teens From Bombing Utah School, Stealing Plane

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:31 AM PST

Roy, Utah student Bailey Gerhardt, 16, alerted Roy High School about a suspicious text message, which foiled plans by two classmates who were allegedly plotting to set off a bomb during a school assembly and escape in a stolen airplane.

Gerhardt told The Salt Lake Tribune that she received the text from a 16-year-old boy that asked: "If I told you to stay home on a certain day, would you?"

The boy, whose named hasn't been released because he's a minor, and 18-year-old Dallin Morgan (pictured) were pulled out of school Wednesday and arrested.

Roy police spokeswoman Anna Bond said Thursday: "It was the work of a very courageous student who came forward. It could have been a disaster."

Gerhardt said the 16-year-old was angry because he was recently dumped by his girlfriend. She said he had told her he had looked into the 1999 mass shootings at Colorado's Columbine High School.

Chief of Police Gregory Whinham said the Roy High School plot was months in planning and included plans for a device designed to cause as much harm as possible to students and faculty at the school.

Police also discovered the two teens had trained on flight simulation software for their getaway.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: A Closer Look at Arizona's Juron Criner

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 09:26 AM PST

  • Arizona Wildcats, Senior, WR
  • 6'4" 215 lbs.

Pros

Great size and speed. Has fantastic concentration while ball is in the air. Hand eye coordination is one of the best in the class which allows him to get his hands on the ball and make the catch both in the air and in coverage. Uses his body purposefully to shield off defenders. Good route runner, can improve with coaching. Moves quickly after the catch to get more yardage or the score. Has a tendency to use his body to trap the ball, but uses his hands to make the catch.

Cons

Needs to work on separating himself from DBs, body control, and work harder going after the throw, not just allowing the ball to come to him.

Comments

Criner was unsure if he would play this season or not due to an undisclosed personal situation this summer followed by an appendectomy which kept him out of the Oklahoma State game. He also was limited in a couple games with minor hand and knee injuries. He was QB Nick Foles favorite target, but Foles spread the ball around as seven other receivers had more than 20 receptions. With all that said, Criner still finished the year with 75 catches for 956 yards and 11 TDs.

Video: Police Officer Posts Picture of Bullet-Ridden Obama T-Shirt on Facebook

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 08:52 AM PST

Sgt. Pat Shearer of Peoria, Arizona, admitted to KNXV-TV that he took a photo of several young men (maybe minors) posing with assault rifles and an Obama T-shirt that had been riddled with bullets. Sgt. Shearer posted it to his Facebook page with the caption "Another trip to the ranch (video below).

Sgt. Shearer defended the picture: "I don't think that the shooting of that T-shirt is that big of a deal. It was more of a political statement. It's not like they were going to go out and shoot the president."

However, Peoria Police spokesman Jay Davies told KPHO-TV: "We received information about a possible policy violation today involving one of our employees. We were contacted by the Secret Service."

Sgt. Shearer has since removed the photo (below) from his Facebook page, but Peoria police are investigating if he violated their social media policy.

Because he was so high up in the air when the incident took place, Moore was able to contort his body in a way that allowed him to fall on his back in a moderately safe position. Once he landed on the snowy ground Moore proceeded to brush his shoulders off, get some love from the crowd, and go on to win the gold medal.

Manny Pacquiao to Fight Either Bradley or Cotto Next; Marquez Later

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 07:58 AM PST

In a span of days we've traded the Manny Pacquiao fight that everyone wanted to see for the Manny Pacquiao fight that nobody has cared about since it was first proposed.

As we noted yesterday on Opposing Views, talks for a Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. showdown effectively died this weekend because of both fighters' stubbornness and inflexibility. Pacquiao reneged on a public offer he made back in December to give Mayweather the lion's share of the purse in the event of a potential superfight, and Mayweather got eerily quiet when Pacquiao called his bluff and actually agreed to the fight pending a 50-50 split.

Both men are responsible for this fight not occurring in May as most hoped it would, and both men have let down boxing fans everywhere with their non-stop stupid games. (Again).

Predictably, talk has now turned to who each guy will fight next. While Mayweather has kept his next opponent pretty close to the vest, Pacquiao's camp wasted no time in floating potential targets out there for public approval/condemnation.

This past weekend, we reported on Opposing Views that Pacquiao's back-up plan to Mayweather all along had apparently been Miguel Cotto. Although he's still a very likely candidate, talks with him hit a slight snag recently when a dispute arose over what weight he'd have to fight Pacquiao at.

That minor bump in the road has given new life to another potential showdown – Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley. You might remember that Pacquiao vs. Bradley was a bout that everyone foresaw coming when the latter fighter signed with Top Rank late last year. You might also remember that nobody wanted to see that fight because Pacquiao is so much better than Bradley that it wouldn't even be fair. Well, if Pacquiao and Cotto's camps don't begin to inch their way towards some progress soon, that unfortunate match-up is where we're headed.

As per Nick Giongco of Manila Bulletin:

Manny Pacquiao has narrowed down his choice to Miguel Cotto and Tim Bradley after being told that it's becoming hopeless to aspire for a super showdown with Floyd Mayweather in the near future.

Pacquiao told the Bulletin that Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is working hard to put a deal in place for a June 9 fight in Las Vegas and that while Cotto is the lead candidate to land the lucrative payday, Bradley is not far behind.

Making a deal for a Cotto fight, however, has hit a wall after the Puerto Rican insisted that he is not willing to give in to Pacquiao's demand that he drop to 147 lbs, saying he can go down not lower than 150 lbs because it's been a while since he fought below 150 lbs.

So there you go.

It's also being reported that Pacquiao and his people are working towards a fourth match against Juan Manuel Marquez for November. As per Ernesto Castellanos of Boxing Scene:

Before Marquez commits to any move, he wants a contract agreement that guarantees him a November fight with Pacquiao [or the winner of Pacquiao's June fight].

"Before I accept an agreement, it must include a fight against Pacquiao. Otherwise I will not sign it. I will not serve as a stepping stone for others," Marquez said.

A fourth fight against Marquez in November, of course, would mean that there will be no first fight against Mayweather in November.

Shocking.

Jessica Biel Disappointed With Small Engagement Ring

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 11:47 PM PST

Jessica Biel is rumored to have finally gotten her wish with longtime boyfriend Justin Timberlake proposing to her.

Biel was spotted on the red carpet of  the Golden Globe without her engagement ring leaving everyone wondering were they or weren't they engaged?

The National Enquirer is reporting that the couple are in engaged, but Jessica didn't like the engagement ring because it was too small.

A source claims,

"When Justin proposed to Jessica, she was disappointed with his choice of ring. Jessica isn't a fancy girl, but she wanted something stunning – a bigger diamond that would impress her friends. Instead, Justin went more minimal, thinking she'd prefer something less flashy."  The insider continued, "Jessica told Justin that although she was moved by his proposal, she wanted a ring with more bling. He was very understanding and told her that she deserves to have what she wants.  To placate her, Justin has not only enlisted his mom for help with the ring, but he's going to propose all over again."

The National Enquirer is not the most credible source leaving the story questionable at best.  What do you think – did Jessica really have Justin buy her another ring?

Speaking to Michelangelo Signorile on SiriusXM radio, Tennessee State Senator Stacey Campfield (R) claimed on Thursday that it was nearly impossible to get AIDS through heterosexual sex.

Sen. Campfield said: "Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community. It was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall. My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex."

"(Homosexuals) do not naturally reproduce," Sen. Campfield continued. "It has not been proven that it is nature. It happens in nature, but so does beastiality. That does not make it right or something we should be teaching in school."

While it accepted that HIV probably crossed species from chimps to humans, there is no evidence that this was caused by bestiality, but rather African bushman butchering and consuming simian meat.

According to the the Center for Disease Control, male-to-male sexual contact has been the most common way to transmit AIDS, followed by injection drug use and heterosexual sex.

UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis Pre-Fight Press Conference Highlights

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 11:04 PM PST

The UFC is held their pre-fight press conference for UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis today (Jan.26). In attendance were UFC President Dana White and main card fighters Rashad Evans, Phil Davis, Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping, Demian Maia, Chris Weidman, Mike Russow and Jon Olav Einemo.

UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis Pre-Fight Press Conference Highlights (thanks to MMAMania.com):

Rashad Evans

• I'm definitely excited to be fighting on a regular basis again. When I win this fight, I'm looking to fight again as soon as possible. I'm looking to get as many fights as I can before the gas runs out.

• When you talk about fighting, a fight is a fight. It's easier to fight when you don't like somebody. I've got nothing against Phil. I've got to fight him so I've got a lot against him right now. So, it's not really personal, but it's personal.

• (Speaking to Davis) If we wrestled in college, I guarantee I would have beat you. If we wrestled right now, I guarantee I'd beat you. Your technique is trash. You can't win on an international stage because you have trash technique. I watched you wrestle in college and it was trash.

Phil Davis

• There's no disrespect. This man is the outright number one contender and he's not going to be the number one contender anymore after this weekend. I'm used to being the underdog in MMA. Everyone I've ever fought has always had more experience. These are odds I'm used to.

• Cocaine is a hell of a drug. It's crazy what the kids do now days. I encourage imagination and it's good that he has that, but no. He'll never beat me in wrestling, not thumb wrestling, not anything of the sort. You guys that have not wrestled, we were in the same divisions, similar weight classes. I was a four time All-American.

• It felt bad, I really wanted to (fight Evans) in front of everyone, but now I get to fight him on Fox and embarrass him in front of everybody.

Chael Sonnen

• For those of you that can't see, this is the world championship title that I took from Anderson Silva. And in this country, possession is nine-tenths of the law. So, finders keepers, losers weepers. If he wants it back, he knows where to find me.

• I believe that I am the true champion, and this is the true belt. I took his belt from Anderson like a gangster in the night. If he wants it back, he can come get it. He's as relevant as Mike Tyson.

• I wasn't much of a pro wrestling guy (growing up). I was a Sugar Ray Leonard guy – Marvin Haggler, Duran. We didn't have cable TV. my dad said we couldn't get it where we lived, even though all of our friends had it. Then I find out we were just really poor. But, I did go over to neighbors' house to watch Sugar Ray fight.

• I have three questions for Bisping: First, whatcha gonna do when you know who, how you gonna deal with the man of steel, and how you gonna react to Sonnen's attack?

Michael Bisping

• Of course, (Chael's) the best boxer. He's Muhammed Ali, he's the champ, he's everything. And I'm just a guy from England trying to fight him, what chance do I have? Let's be honest, I'll outbox him every night of the week. He's a great wrestler, I'm a great boxer.

• I think it's going to be fantastic. Chael's a great fighter, I'm a great fighter, and I'm sure there's going to be a lot of energy. Whether it positive or negative, I feed off of the energy, and I'm sure there's going to be a lot of it.

• This wouldn't be the first time that I'm the underdog in a fight, and it wouldn't be the first time I proved them wrong. The best fighter doesn't always win, it's the guy that fights best, and I'm going to win. And he can keep his fake belt and shove it up his a–.

Demian Maia

• I like Chael, he's funny. And he's a very good athlete. He has proven that against Anderson, and after Anderson, against Stann, he did very well. I hope one day we can fight again, for the title. For his title (points at Chael's replica belt).

• I heard he said he wants to go to the ground, but fighters say things before the fight, but once it starts, things change. I cannot be concerned with that, I need to be prepared to fight any place.

Chris Weidman

• I'm definitely comfortable taking it to the ground if that's what ends up happening. It's going to start on the feet, and I'm going to do what I usually do, walk forward and throw punches, and if the opportunity presents itself, I'll take it to the ground.

• I don't see this fight as a no-lose situation. I have to win this fight in my eyes. If I lose this fight, it's do or die for me. If I look at it that way, it gives me an excuse to lose.

MMA News: Shane Roller Talks Michael Johnson, UFC on FOX and More

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 10:59 PM PST

For Team Takedown member Shane Roller it's all about helping his teammates out. Training with a group of wrestler's day in and day out offers him a sense of comfort and keeps his skills sharp. They all share in one another's joy when they win and pain when they lose. That is what being part of a team is all about.

Roller is all set to face The Ultimate Fighter season 12 finalist Michael Johnson this Saturday night as the UFC presents UFC on Fox: Evans vs. Davis. This is the first card under the deal with Fox, but in actuality it's the second show behind last November's one fight telecast that saw Junior Dos Santos defeat Cain Velasquez for the UFC Heavyweight title.

Roller knows there are no guarantees in this business and anything can and probably will happen once that cage door closes. You don't have to look any further than Johny Hendricks 12 second knockout of perennial welterweight contender Jon Fitch at UFC 141. To call it an upset would be putting it mildly unless you train with Hendricks all the time.

Both men attended Oklahoma State University and Roller was a coach when Hendricks was busy winning two NCAA Division I wrestling titles. In fact two other Team Takedown members, Jake and Josh Rosholt attended OSU as well. The bond is strong as one can imagine.

"We're like a close knit family," Roller explained. "We've all known each other for some time now. It's good to have a team that wants to see everyone achieve their goals and where everyone looks out for one another. We love to see each other have success; we feel as though we are all apart of one others success. We help prepare one another for all of our fights. Watching Johnny win his fight against Fitch gave me an overwhelming sense of pride."

A lot of wrestlers depend solely on their grappling skills going into a fight. These days with everyone training in all facets of MMA equally, wrestlers need to sharpen their skills in all of the other areas. Roller knows this all too well and is willing to do whatever it takes to improve his overall ability.

"I'm getting better every year, I lost my last two and have had some setbacks," offered Roller. "I do feel like I'm growing as a fighter and I feel like I am getting better at all positions. I am trying to blend my standup with my wrestling and my Jiu-Jitsu. I definitely feel like I'm getting better each fight. I feel as though my standup could get a lot better so I am concentrating on that more and more."

Having lost his last two fights Roller finds his UFC record at 1-2. Before the WEC was merged into the UFC he had an impressive 6-2 record with wins over Jamie Varner, Anthony Njokuani, Danny Castillo and Marcus Hicks. He began his UFC career with a win over Thiago Tavares in a bout that earned him Knockout of the Night, but subsequently lost to Melvin Guillard and TJ Grant. Roller knows its do or die for him as the UFC doesn't normally hold onto fighters with three losses in a row.

"I take the approach that every fight is a must win," said Roller. "I know what's on the line and I have to do whatever it takes to get my hand raised. I know I have a big advantage over Johnson when it comes to submissions and grappling. Wrestling is my biggest attribute and he is mostly known for his boxing so it would be in my best interest to get this fight to the ground. He has some power in his hands and he has a good standup game."

Johnson was originally scheduled to face Cody McKenzie, but Roller stepped in after an injury caused McKenzie to bow out of the contest. Taking a fight on short notice is never in a fighters best interests, but they make due with the circumstances they are given. Roller has no qualms about taking this fight a few weeks before it was scheduled to take place. In fact he is very confident things will go his way.

"To be honest this is the first time I've ever taken a fight on short notice," explained Roller. "I've always had a full camp to train and get ready, but rest assured I'll be prepared. I'm trying to take it to the next level and in order to do so I have to make sure I'm prepared. I'm cramming in as much as possible where as if I had 6 to 8 weeks I could take things a bit slower. I think my hand will get raised, I'm thinking I'll take him down with a submission. Like I said I have a big advantage in that area and I plan on using it."

Dana White Basically Taunts UFC.com Hackers

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 10:53 PM PST

At first, news of the UFC's URL being redirected to UGNazi.com by hackers elicited little more than a scoff from UFC president Dana White, but now outspoken promotional figurehead sounds ready to dig in his heels and make a fight of it.

"I'm not afraid of you," White said today (via MMAJunkie). "So you want to keep hacking our site? Go for it. Watch what happens. You're hurting yourself."

The hackers targeted the UFC for supporting SOPA, a bill that essentially proposes to allow the government to censor the internet. Admitting that the bill isn't a perfect one, but that his promotion supports it to fight against piracy, White explained that the hackers may have given the bill new life and are simply waging a battle that they cannot hope to win.

"These guys look like terrorists now," White said. "And a bill that was about to die is about to come back. Now you guys look like terrorists. Politicians were terrified of the internet. Now, you're making them mad. And one thing that everybody has to learn and everybody has to know – everybody's saying, 'You can't beat the Internet.'

"No, you can't beat the fu**ing government. That's who you can't beat. That's a fight you will always lose."

Russell Brand Dating Girls, Trashing Katy Perry?

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 10:51 PM PST

According to US Weekly Russell Brand has already moved on from Katy Perry (he filed for divorce December 30) and not only that he is badmouthing Katy to the women he's boning. And of course he is going to ask one of these women to move in with him. According to US's source:

"She discovered through her friends," an insider tells Us of how Perry found out about 36-year-old Brand's wandering eye. "One of the women told a friend of hers and it got back to Katy."

"He's spoken terribly about Katy to them," the source says of Brand, who has sought out one particular woman to "explore a relationship" with. "[Russell] told her he wanted her to move in with him after the divorce is final,"

Perhaps I'm being biased because my loins catch fire when I think of Russell Brand, but this story sounds like a whole lot of bullsh*t to me so I'll go with the facts (as far as I know them considering I don't know these people at all). It's interesting how nothing bad has come out of Russell's mouth since he filed. He's only tweeted once whereas Katy has indicated her heart is happy again yet he is being vilified. Sure he was a womanizer in the past but if he were womanizing now (which if he's single I guess he's entitled to) wouldn't we see evidence somehow, someway?

He's remained quiet and classy about it all and if it's true he is badmouthing Katy, sooner or later a tape or recording of that is going to come out one would think.

What do you think, probably true or dog poopoo?

Eva Mendes Says Her Body Comes From Hard Work

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 10:44 PM PST

Eva Mendes says she is not "naturally slim" and instead attributes her great body to consistent exercise and healthy eating.

She explained to Health & Beauty magazine that

"…I work out hard and I am consistent. It can be difficult fitting in exercise when I'm on location as there just isn't time, but I always try to do a shortened version of my usual routine."

Mendes then went into detail about her exercise routine, revealing

"I exercise at least five days a week; I love to run and I mix it up with light weights and squats. I also do yoga twice a week to stretch my body. Plus, it helps with my posture and relaxes my mind."

The 37-year-old actress wasn't always so mindful about her health, though, revealing

"I never cared about exercise or what I was eating until I reached my 20s and then I started eating well and going from drinking no water to up to three litres a day. I really believe in the beauty philosophy of starting from within now; it's kind of changed my life."

Video: Rick Santorum Calls Global Warming a "Hoax"

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 10:39 PM PST

During the Florida GOP presidential debate Thursday night, host Wolf Blitzer asked Rick Santorum why he was the Republican candidate most likely to defeat President Obama (video below).

Santorum explained his differences with fellow candidates Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, and then capped it off with: "Both of them bought into the global warming hoax!"

This not the first time Rick Santorum has denied global warming science. Last summer, Santorum told Glenn Beck that "there was no such thing as global warming."

Fun Fact: Married Women Want Affair with Giants Eli Manning, Not Patriots Tom Brady

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 10:30 PM PST

Good news, a poll of married women conducted by the notorious AshleyMadison.com found that they would much rather have an affair with New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning than New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Or, in other words, women prone to making bad decisions (i.e. cheating on their husbands) prefer New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

According to the New York Post, 54 percent of married women who participated in the poll said they would rather commit adultery with the Manning brother who up until this year wasn't even the best football player in his own family. Apparently, his "boy next door" looks and charm coupled with the perception that he's "less of a hothead" than Brady ended up making Manning more alluring to what is undoubtedly the Lifetime channel's target audience.

Only 46 percent of women who participated in the poll said that they would want an affair with Brady.

What a loser, am I right?

So there you have it. Sorry, Tom Brady – world famous supermodels may throw themselves at you, but their moms only have eyes for Eli.

(Kudos to Larry Brown Sports for the find)

MMA Video: Ronda Rousey Not a Fan of GSP, Apparently

"Rowdy" Ronda Rousey has made her name off of fast finishes and an even faster mouth, armbarring and trash-talking her way into a title shot against Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion Miesha Tate after bursting onto the scene just last year.

The 24-year-old is blunt in expression and forthcoming in response when asked of her opinion, leading to quotes like the following (transcribed from an interview with BestofMMA.com done prior to Rousey's November victory over Julia Budd), where she torches UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
